The Other Side Podcast Network :  Our other shows

TuxJam 122 – Refined rEFInd

Al, Andrew, Kevie and Dave unite once more and settle down for a pleasant evening of beers and chat about goodness that is free and open source, or creative and common. They begin, as always, with a distrowatch dabble and thereafter split into two teams of two.

Team Nerd, Andrew and Al, delve into the mystical world of boot managers with a look at rEFInd currently maintained by Rod Smith. Meanwhile, Team Social, Dave and Kevie, converse with Nik, the author of Pachli, the client for Mastodon-like services, part of a Nivenly Foundation, that we reviewed back in TuxJam 114.

On Saturday 2 August you are cordially invited to join us and many others for our next Podcrawl, details of which are posted here.

Just prior to our recording we learned that there will be no OggCamp in 2025 (boo!) but there will in 2026 (yay!) on 25-26 April, at the same venue as last time, the Pendulum Hotel, Manchester.

We conclude with a roundup of feedback and we encourage you, dear listener, to submit any feedback you may have.

Songs

  1. Sammy Vulcano – Till I Found Love
  2. Kinematic – Don’t Be Afraid
  3. Boogie Belgique – All Over The World (track is CC from download link)
  4. Silver Roy – Open My Eyes

TuxJam 121 – Kumander & Keyboard

Dave, Kevie, Andrew and Al join forces to bring you more Free and Open Source Software goodness laced with musical notes from tunes licensed under Creative Commons.

We begin with our usual round up of more unusual distros from distrowatch.com and then move on to review Kumander Linux. Many folk will soon be forced by Microsoft to “upgrade” to Windows 11 but Kumander wants to take you back to the days of Windows 7 by way of themed distro built on Debian and XFCE.

We then recount our experiences in trying out the FUTO keyboard for Android. Amongst other things, it promises a free and open source app that will not unnecessarily go online and start sharing your keystrokes.

We end with our usual round up of feedback received and also our experiences of attending Podcrawl Easter 2025. If you have a comment to make or a suggestion of what we might review in the future, please do contact us.

Creative commons tunes played in this episode includes:

  1. Verandas – Liberty

TuxJam 120 – Tunnels & Texts

Al, Andrew, Dave and Kevie come together again to find their way through some FOSS pickings sprinkled with creative common tunes. They start as always with a round-up of recent releases found on distrowatch.com.

Dave and Al have taken a look at cluster of tools named after burrowing animals – Pangolin, Gerbil, Badger and Newt – which provides solutions for tunneling, reverse proxies and authentication. The collective noun for such things is, apparently, a fossorial 🙂

Going from the complex to the simple, at least for the end-user, Kevie and Andrew try out Deku SMS which describes itself as “proof-of-concept for secure SMS messaging, SMS image transmission and SMS-Cloud communications”.

Podcrawl Easter 2025 will be on Saturday 18 April 2025 from 5pm UTC (UK time). All our welcome with details of how to join being available here.

If you have a comment to make or a suggestion of what we might review in the future, please do contact us.

TuxJam 119 – Mini Fun Plus

Our FOSStering foursome – Kevie, Dave, Andrew and Al – forge forward into 2025 feeling funny. First off, as usual, they review recent OS releases on Distrowatch.

Then the “fun” begins with Kevie and Andrew’s review of FunOS. Is it fun? If so, who will have fun with it? To find out you’ll have to listen.

The default desktop background in FunOS at the time of review.

Next up is fun of a more literal kind with the Miyoo Mini Plus (pronounced Miyoo Mini Plus) which offers up retro gaming in an inexpensive compact handheld device. Al and Dave-the-non-gamer went through the hardship of reviewing it, although the latter has since become Dave-the-Dr-Mario-Maestro. The Reddit post that discusses the Miyoo Mini Plus images can be found here.

We were delighted to have received quite a bit of feedback to review. If you have a comment to make or a suggestion of what we might review in the future, please do contact us.

Podcrawl Late-Winter 2025 (or Late-Summer for antipodeans) will be on Saturday 8 February 2025 from 6pm UTC (UK time). All our welcome with details of how to join being available here.

TuxJam 118 – Phans of Bash

Your FOSSy foursome of Al, Dave, Kevie and Andrew are gearing up for Christmas with an extra-special episode recorded over two sessions and then painstakingly edited together by Kevie.

As usual we kick things off with a round-up of recent OS releases on distrowatch. We then take a look at Bashcrawl created by the venerable klaatu, who was kind enough to do a short interview with Andrew about how and why he created it.

Kevie and Dave then take a look at a minimalist browser-based mastodon client that is ripe for self-hosting called Phanpy.

We end with our usual review of feedback received. And by a Christmas miracle (thanks Santa Kevie) this episode was edited together just in time for us to forewarn you of podcrawl on 21 Dec 18:00 UTC.

This episode may not be live as in TuxJam 115 from Oggcamp but your friendly foursome of Al, Dave (thelovebug), Kevie and Andrew (mcnalu) are very much alive to treats of Free and Open Source Software and Creative Commons tunes.

We start, as always, with our roundup of recent releases from the watch of the distros and then move on to try out two applications.

First up, Andrew and Kevie find out how much duplicated data is clogging up their hard drives using the command line tools fdupes.

Next, at the more visual and non-command-liney end of the software spectrum, Dave and Al try out Immich (say it out loud) which is a self-hosted video and photo management solution.

Following a round of feedback we close out the show. Our next edition which will be our annual Gifts for Geeks, so rein in your reindeer until then Santa! Please do contact us if you have any comments on what we’ve said or indeed any suggested geeky gift ideas.

TuxJam 115 – OggCamp 2024

tuxjam image

With the group meeting up together for the first time in person, it was decided that a live recording would be an appropriate venture. With the quartet squashed around a table and a group of adoring fans crowded into a room at the Pendulum Hotel in Manchester, the discussion turns to TuxJam reviews that become regularly used applications, what we enjoyed about OggCamp 2024 and for the third section the gang put their reputation on the line and allow open questions from the sea of dedicated fans.

Despite this being a live recording, it wouldn’t be the same if TuxJam didn’t have the usual mix of Creative Commons tracks:

TuxJam 114 – Pachways

The FOSSy foursome of Al, Andrew, Dave and Kevie return for another bout of linuxy software spiced with creative common tunes.

We begin as always with a round-up of recent releases from distrowatch. Next we review Waydroid which allows you to efficiently run an Android environment if you happen to be running Wayland. Then we take a look at Pachli which is an Android client for Mastodon forked from the Tusky/Husky codebase.

We finish up with a round-up of feedback and offer up a couple of dates that you might want to pop into your diary:

  • Podcrawl Late Summer 2024 on Saturday 31 August from 18:00 UK time (BST).
  • OggCamp 2024 on Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 October 2024, Manchester UK.

Perhaps you would like some TuxJam merch? Thanks to the talents of our very own Kevie we now have designs in our Redbubble shop.

Tuxjam 113 – Ultramarine

tuxjam image

Al, Dave, Andrew and Kevie brave heat and cold and everything in between to bring you free bits and bytes and CC tunes. We start off with our usual roundup of recent releases on distrowatch.

We only have one item for review in this show: the Ultramarine distro based on Fedora. Dave and Al look at the version that runs on regular PCs whereas Kevie and Andrew try out the images provided for 64 bit Raspberry Pis.

We finish up with a brief round-up of feedback and how to contact us.
