TuxJam 95 – Simply Minty

TuxJam logo

The guys return from a long break in the Mediterranean, all sun bronzed and ready for a new episode (not really). In this episode we take a look at the recently released PeppermintOS 11, this being an emotional release as it is the first since the death of the project’s leader Mark Greaves. We also start taking a look at the first of our apps from the Simple Mobile Tools suite: the Simple Keyboard on Android. We take a look back at the Podcrawl in February and also look ahead to the next one, which is due to take place on the 18th June.

TuxJam 94 – Super Quick Retro Emu

In our first show of the new year Dave (aka thelovebug), Kevie and Andrew (aka mcnalu) start with their usual distrowatch roundup, which includes a special recommendation from friend of the show Peter “MintSpider”.

Next we take a look at Quickemu, developed by Martin “Wimpy” Wimpress, and its handy graphical front-end Quickgui, co-developed by another friend of the show, Yannick Mauray along with Mark Johnson. With our serious look at emulation out of the way we play around with Super Retro Mega Wars, an app available via F-Droid and Google Play for Android that helps us relive our misspent arcade game playing youth. Warning: Games were played during the recording.

We finish up with our roundup of feedback, a review of our best-attended podcrawl to date and announcement of the next podcrawl on Saturday 26 February – details will appear here. Please do let us have any feedback and feel to bring it along with a beer or two to the podcrawl. Kevie briefly discusses a Christmas present he received: a retro style bluetooth speaker and FM radio.

TuxJam 93 – ICE? ICE? Maybe

TuxJam logo

In this festive themed show Dave (aka thelovebug), Kevie and Andrew (aka mcnalu) start with their usual distrowatch roundup and then take a look at the ICE Site Specific Browser (SSB), developed by the PeppermintOS team, which turns many web applications into desktop friendly apps. We go back to our childhood Christmases with a look at some emulation software to play classic games including Dune, Dune II and Duke Nukem on DosBox and Crazee Rider on BeebEm for linux which Andrew managed to compile from the BBC micro source code after some some slashing around.

Festive Tracks:

TuxJam 91 – Stellar Serenity

Following our usual summer hiatus we are back at our microphones to bring you some ear chutney lovingly made from recent falls of free and open source software, spiced with creative commons musical goodness.

After we have scanned distrowatch for recently releases we turn our attention to non-linux non-distro called Serenity OS. It is built from the ground up as a love letter to the UNIXy operating systems of the late 90s and early naughties. An era which your hosts remember with varying degrees of fondness. Next up is a review of a simple android app called Planisphere. If you are looking for a no-frills FOSS app to help you find your way around the night sky then this may be for you. We end, as always, with a round-up of comments from you, dear listeners.

  1. Bumy Goldson – Bluebird
  2. Bessonn&Sa – Your Love Explodes
  3. Red Crickets – Flowers (From Her Gun)
  4. Eventual Groove – Melda One

TuxJam 90 – Rocking it Retro

Andrew, Dave and Kevie are enjoying cake, jelly and ice cream as TuxJam turns 10 years old. With a look back to the first episode we look at the distro that has replaced SimplyMepis: MX Linux. To our amazement, the lightweight music player Pogo is still being maintained and we do another review ten years down the line. We look ahead to the upcoming Podcrawl which will take place on Saturday 26th July at 6pm (UK time), keep an eye on the Podcrawl page for the video conference link (available nearer the time).

The creative commons tracks are all from bands that were played during the first five episodes and should give the seasoned listener a feeling of Jamendo nostalgia.

TuxJam 89 – Crushing rocks

tuxjam graphic

Kevie, Dave (aka thelovebug) and Andrew (aka mcnalu) are joined by Marshall (aka timttmy), who, while not crushing rocks, has set up and run a Snikket server for instant messaging.

We discuss how we use Snikket via its app in preparing each episode of TuxJam (yes, unbelievable perhaps, but we do try!) and Marshall’s experience of installing and maintaining the server.

We also take a look at recent releases listed on distrowatch and have a look at the Solus linux distro with the Budgie desktop. As usual, we bring things to a close with a round up of feedback.

Creative Commons tunes played in this episode are:

TuxJam 88 – From KaOS there was order

tuxjam graphic

In this episode of TuxJam, the usual crew of Andrew, Dave and Kevie take a look at some of the Distrowatch offers of the month, along with some more in-depth reviews of the KaOS distro and Android screen recorder ScreenCam. We also take a look back to the socially distant and COVID-19 restrictions compliant Podcrawl Jitsi which took place in mid-March.

CCmusic tracks included in this episode are:

TuxJam 87 – This will be short

tuxjam graphic

Our freedom loving trio of Dave (aka thelovebug), Kevie and Andrew (aka mcnalu) begin 2021’s run of TuxJam with what they thought would be a shorter than usual episode. As usual, they proved themselves wrong.

First up is a roundup of new releases reported on distrowatch.com which prompted discussions which will be followed up in future episodes or perhaps on Hacker Public Radio.

We do not review a distro in this episode but take a look at the cute pixel art game Android game Xeonjia which Kevie discovered when trying to entertain himself on a long ferry crossing. We then take a look at radio streaming android app Transistor.

We finish with a few words on the latest podcrawl jitsi or jitcrawl podsi or jitpod crawlsi that took place in December. We air the idea of having it quarterly close to the solstices and equinoxes with a mooted next date of 20th March 2021. Do let us know what you think about that in comments, by email or via social media.

All this along with the usual mix of CCmusic:

Jon Worthy – Happy to See You
Flashinmusic – My Happy Walk
Whacko Sacco – How Can I Win
DeepDaikon & Yubatake – Town from Xeonjia

TuxJam 86 – Pop goes the penguin

tuxjam graphic

After a long and strange year people are looking forward to Christmas 2020 and none more so than your TuxJam hosts, Kevie, Dave and Andrew.

In this episode we begin with our usual round up of distrowatch and then we review a distro and an app with a vaguely festive theme. The GNU/linux distro is Pop!_OS which is based on Ubuntu. The app is for android and is Tux Rider which will be familiar to anyone who has played Tux Racer on the linux desktop. We then review a good amount of feedback and announce the results of Andrew’s “guess my shopping list” from last week’s show. (And no, Chalkahlom, 50% of his list is not alcoholic drinks!)

Creative Commons tracks:

Jingle Bells – Anup

Linda Heins – O Little Town of Bethlehem

Vitne – Winter Love Song

Wood Hitch – Auld Lang Syne (Don’t Waste My Time)
